Context Sources & Product Summary
Overview
Context Sources are the knowledge base that powers all AI features in MindBacklog. They teach the AI about your product — what it does, who it's for, and how it works. Everything from signal classification to PRD generation depends on this context.
How to get there: The Mind → Knowledge in the left sidebar. (The "Knowledge" page was previously labeled "Context." Context Sources live on its "Context Sources" tab.)
Three Source Types
| Type | Input | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Web URL | Paste a URL → AI crawls and extracts content | Landing pages, documentation, marketing sites |
| PDF Upload | Upload .pdf file → AI extracts text | Pitch decks, product specs, design docs |
| Manual Text | Paste text directly | Internal notes, strategy briefs, competitive analysis |
When adding a URL, you can optionally enable website crawling. This follows links on the page and processes up to 30 connected pages. Great for documentation sites with multiple pages.
How to Add New Context Sources
Navigate to The Mind → Knowledge
Click The Mind in the sidebar to expand it, then click Knowledge (previously labeled "Context").
Click "Add Source"
Choose your source type (URL, PDF, or Text) and provide the content.
AI Generates a Summary
The AI processes the source and creates a structured summary. The source is now staged — meaning it hasn't been merged into the Product Summary yet.
The Product Summary
The Product Summary is the master AI profile for your product. It's a synthesized document that combines insights from all your context sources into a single, coherent understanding. Every AI feature references this document.
- Initially generated during product setup (Step 3 of the wizard)
- Grows stronger as you add more context sources and merge them
- Can be manually edited at any time
- Version history is tracked — you can view and roll back to previous versions
How to Merge Staged Sources
After adding new sources, they're "staged." To incorporate their knowledge into the Product Summary:
Click "Merge Staged Sources"
On the Knowledge page, click the merge button. The AI analyzes all staged sources against the current summary.
Review the Diff
The AI shows you what will change: additions, updates, and potential conflicts. Review the proposed changes.
Approve or Reject
Accept the merge to update your Product Summary, or reject to keep the current version.
Merge staged sources whenever you add significant new context — after a product launch, major release, or strategy pivot. A stale Product Summary leads to stale AI outputs across the entire platform.
Context Tips
- Quality over quantity — 5 good sources beat 20 thin ones. Each should add meaningful product knowledge.
- Don't worry about overlap — The AI intelligently merges overlapping information and deduplicates concepts.
- Include competitive positioning — Add text about how you differ from competitors. This helps the AI write more differentiated PRDs and feature descriptions.
- Add user personas — If you have defined personas, include them. The AI uses personas for story generation and prioritization context.
