Slack Integration

Overview

MindBacklog's Slack integration lets your team capture product feedback directly from Slack conversations. Instead of feedback getting lost in chat threads, anyone can send it to MindBacklog with a simple slash command or right-click shortcut — where it is automatically processed by the AI pipeline and appears in your Intelligence Hub.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • Admin access to your MindBacklog product
  • Admin access to the Slack workspace you want to connect (or permission to approve app installations)
  • An active MindBacklog subscription with available signal credits

Connecting Slack

Only Admin users can configure the Slack integration.

Step 1

Open the Integrations page

Open Integrations in the left sidebar (under "The Mind") and select the Native Apps tab. You will see the Slack Integration card. Click on it to expand the configuration panel.

Step 2

Connect Your Slack Workspace

Click the "Connect Slack" button. You will be redirected to Slack's OAuth consent screen, where you must authorize MindBacklog to access your Slack workspace. Grant the requested permissions and you will be redirected back to MindBacklog.

Step 3

Select Channels

After connecting, you can optionally select which Slack channels MindBacklog should listen to (using the channel picker). By default, the integration works in any channel where the MindBacklog bot has been invited.

🔒
Private Channels

Slack bots cannot automatically see private channels. To use MindBacklog in a private channel, you must manually invite the app via Channel Details > Integrations > Add Apps > MindBacklog, or type /invite @MindBacklog inside the channel. Once invited, refresh the channel picker.

Submitting Feedback from Slack

There are two ways to send feedback from Slack to MindBacklog:

1

Slash Command (/mb)

Type /mb followed by your feedback in any channel where MindBacklog is present:

/mb The checkout flow crashes on mobile when using Apple Pay
2

Message Shortcut

For messages someone else wrote that contain useful feedback: hover over the message, click the three-dot menu (⋮), and select Send to MindBacklog from the shortcuts menu.

Both methods will show an ephemeral confirmation message (only visible to you) that the feedback was captured and is being processed.

What Happens After Feedback Is Submitted

Once feedback is captured from Slack, it follows the same real-time AI pipeline as all other channels:

  1. Signal creation: A new signal appears in the Intelligence Hub's Raw Feed with the "Slack" channel type.
  2. AI classification: The AI classifies it (feature request, bug report, praise, etc.).
  3. Sentiment analysis: Determines the tone (positive, negative, neutral).
  4. Summary extraction: An AI-generated summary is created for quick reading.

Signal Credits

Each feedback submission from Slack consumes one signal credit from your organization's plan. If your team has exhausted all signal credits:

  • The slash command or shortcut will respond with: "Your team's MindBacklog signal processing limit has been reached for this period."
  • No signal is created and no credit is consumed.

Error States & Recovery

Connection Lost

If the Slack integration encounters an error (e.g., the app was removed from your Slack workspace), MindBacklog shows a persistent purple warning banner across the platform: "Slack connection lost — feedback ingestion paused. Reconnect or disconnect Slack to dismiss."

Reconnecting or Disconnecting

Navigate to Integrations → Native Apps → Slack. You can select "Reconnect Slack" to perform the OAuth flow again, or "Disconnect" to fully remove the integration. Disconnecting will NOT delete any signals already captured from Slack.

FAQ & Troubleshooting

QuestionAnswer
Do Slack users need a MindBacklog account? No. Anyone in the connected Slack workspace can submit feedback. Their Slack display name and email are used to attribute the signal.
What if someone submits feedback in a channel that isn't connected? They'll receive an ephemeral error message explaining that the channel isn't connected to any MindBacklog product.
Can I see which signals came from Slack?Yes. In the Intelligence Hub's Raw Feed, signals from Slack show a Slack icon. You can filter by channel type to see only Slack submissions.
Is image or file content supported? Not currently. MindBacklog processes text-based feedback only. Image-only messages will be rejected by the shortcut.
Duplicate protection? If the same message is sent to MindBacklog more than once, the system detects the duplicate and warns the user.
