Competitor Discovery — AI Market Intelligence

Overview

Competitor Discovery is a powerful AI-driven engine that scans the web, app stores, and industry databases to identify products that compete with yours. Instead of manually searching for rivals, the MIND Engine does the research for you, presenting a curated list of suggestions with descriptions and relevance scores.

How to get there: The Mind → Channels → Discover Competitors

How It Works

The discovery process happens in three sophisticated stages:

🔍

1. Deep Search

AI generates product-specific queries to scan web results, app stores, and review aggregators.

⚖️

2. Classification

Candidates are analyzed and ranked based on how closely they compete with your product profile.

📡

3. Ready to Track

Pick the tools you want to monitor, and MindBacklog automatically builds the feedback channels.

Running Discovery

Discovery is automatically triggered when you first set up your product. However, you can re-run discovery at any time to find new players in your space.

Step-by-Step

Triggering Discovery

  1. Navigate to The Mind > Channels.
  2. Click the Discover Competitors banner at the top of the page.
  3. The AI will start research. This typically takes 60-90 seconds as it scans live web data.
💡
Freshness Matters

Markets move fast. We recommend running a fresh discovery every quarter to ensure you haven't missed any emerging startups or pivot-moves from existing companies.

Managing Suggestions

Once discovery is complete, you'll see a list of Competitor Suggestions. Each suggestion includes:

  • Confidence Score — A percentage indicating how direct the competition is.
  • Source — Whether it was found via web search, app stores, or AI training knowledge.
  • Metadata — Direct links to their website, App Store, or Play Store pages.

You can Approve a suggestion to start tracking it, or Dismiss it if it's not relevant to your current strategy.

Manual Addition

If you already know a competitor that the AI hasn't suggested, you can add them manually using the Add Manually button at the bottom of the discovery page.

When adding manually, you only need to provide the competitor's name and at least one channel URL (Website, App Store, or Play Store). The AI will then automatically fetch their logo and descriptions.

Tracking Competitors

When you approve a competitor, MindBacklog automatically creates the corresponding Feedback Channels for you. This includes:

  • App Store Scraper for their iOS reviews.
  • Play Store Scraper for their Android ratings.
  • Web Scraper for their public community or review pages (if available).

New reviews from these competitors will flow into your Intelligence Hub alongside your own customer feedback, allowing you to perform Competitive Sentiment Analysis and spot gaps in their offerings. The nightly clustering worker is lens-aware — when it spots a competitor weakness in an area where your product already excels, it drafts a strategic_signal Insight (defensive moat / GTM angle) instead of suggesting you build something you already have.
