Competitive Intelligence

Overview

The Competitive Intelligence page is the single workspace for everything about competitors you're tracking — sentiment trends, capability gaps, pricing changes, and the raw signals behind each insight. Where the Intelligence Hub triages your customer feedback, this page triages the market: what competitors are shipping, what their users love, and what they're failing at.

This is a daily-driver page even on quiet days for your own product — there's almost always something new happening in your competitive set.

How to Get There

Click Competitive Intelligence in the left sidebar. The page is fed automatically from any competitor channel sources you've connected — App Store reviews, Reddit monitors, web scrapers — so the data flows in without manual work.

Competitor Overview Cards

The top of the page shows one card per tracked competitor:

  • Name & logo — scraped from the competitor's website on first ingest.
  • Sentiment score — aggregated from reviews and signals (positive / mixed / negative).
  • Signal count — total signals MindBacklog has collected about this competitor.
  • One-line AI summary — e.g., "Users love their integrations but consistently complain about pricing and support response times."
  • Trend indicator — whether sentiment is improving, declining, or stable vs. the previous period.

Click any card to open the competitor's detail view.

"Gathering" State

When you add a new competitor, the page shows an active gathering state with a three-stage progress indicator: Scanning competitor reviews → Analyzing sentiment → Mapping feature gaps. This usually takes 30–60 seconds for the first competitor and continues quietly per-card for any you add later. The page transitions to the populated view as soon as the first batch of intelligence is ready.

Competitor Detail View

Clicking a competitor card opens a detail page with three tabs:

  • Overview — gap / opportunity matrix and pricing comparison.
  • Signal Feed — every individual signal MindBacklog has about this competitor, filterable.
  • Sentiment Trends (fast-follow) — sentiment over time with significant-change callouts.

Gap / Opportunity Matrix

The Overview tab features a matrix that maps feature areas / themes (rows) against your product and each competitor (columns). Each cell shows:

  • Strength — positive signals (the competitor is winning here).
  • Weakness — negative signals (their users are unhappy here).
  • Gap — no presence (an opportunity to differentiate).

Click any cell to drill into the underlying signals that produced that classification. If a competitor doesn't have enough signal volume yet, the matrix shows a "not enough data yet" state for that column rather than guessing.

💡
Pricing Changes

Pricing comparison is included on the Overview tab when MindBacklog has reliable pricing data. Pricing extraction stays on a manual refresh button — it's the most fragile signal and you shouldn't trust an auto-update without a glance.

Signal Feed (per Competitor)

The Signal Feed tab on a competitor's detail page shows every raw signal we have about them, grouped chronologically and tagged with:

  • Sentiment (positive / neutral / negative)
  • Theme / topic
  • Source channel (App Store, Reddit, web scraper)

Filter by sentiment, theme, date range, or source channel to investigate a specific story (e.g., "show me all negative pricing signals from the last 30 days").

Discover More Competitors

The "Discover Competitors" action lives on this page — click it to re-run the AI-powered market scan that you saw during onboarding. We recommend a fresh discovery once a quarter because markets move fast and new entrants appear. See the Competitor Discovery guide for how the engine works.

First-Time Experience (Onboarding Wow Moment)

Brand-new accounts are routed straight from product setup to this page. While the initial competitor data is being aggregated, you'll see the gathering overlay with a "Try asking Mind while we work" CTA — clicking it pops open the Ask Mind side panel pre-loaded with starter prompts tailored to your product context. The goal: by the time you've sent your first chat message, the page underneath is fully populated and ready to explore.

Best Practices

  • Check daily, even on a quiet day for your product — Competitive Intelligence keeps moving even when your own signal stream is quiet. A 60-second skim of the overview cards catches sentiment shifts early.
  • Use the gap matrix to drive feature ideation — Cells flagged as competitor weaknesses or market gaps are the highest-leverage Radar candidates.
  • Re-run discovery quarterly — Catches new entrants and pivot moves before they become talking points elsewhere.
  • Don't auto-trust pricing — Manual refresh on pricing keeps you in the loop on data that's expensive to be wrong about.
