Concept vs. Active Mode
MindBacklog is uniquely designed as a Product Intelligence Platform that supports your entire product lifecycle from concept to launch to growth. Because building a new product (Day Zero) requires entirely different data and decision-making frameworks than maintaining a live product, the platform adapts to your product's lifecycle via Concept Mode and Active Mode.
What Are Lifecycle Modes?
A Lifecycle Mode is a fundamental setting that tells MindBacklog's AI how to interpret incoming signals, how to score features, and what you're trying to achieve.
- Concept Mode: Used before you launch. You are mining the market for vulnerabilities.
- Active Mode: Used after you launch. You are ingesting live customer feedback to prevent churn and drive expansion.
You can toggle the mode for any product inside Product Settings.
Understanding Concept Mode
Concept Mode is designed for early-stage idea validation, startup MVPs, or massive new product modules (e.g., "Should we build an AI chatbot?").
In this mode, you lack live users. Therefore, you rely on external intelligence.
Point the Scraper at Rivals
Configure the App Store and Web Scraper channels to monitor your top 3 competitors. MindBacklog will automatically ingest their user reviews, pricing page changes, and feature announcements.
Mine for Vulnerabilities
MIND will cluster the competitor complaints into clear "Day Zero Vulnerabilities." You aren't guessing what features to build; you are building exactly what the incumbent's users are begging for.
Pitch with Evidence
Use "Ask Mind" to generate a Concept Pitch. Instead of "I think we should build X," the pitch will read: "We must build X because Rival Y has 240 unresolved churn signals requesting it."
Understanding Active Mode
Once your product has live users, you must flip to Active Mode. Active Mode is designed for rapid triage, churn prevention, and tight feedback loops.
In this mode, the focus shifts entirely to your proprietary channels:
- Support widget & email: Auto-routing support tickets and bug complaints to specific features. (Pipe Zendesk / Intercom / Front via REST API for the same effect.)
- Slack: Tying internal sales requests directly to roadmap items.
- REST API: Ingesting exception logs and hard churn events as quantitative signals.
How Modes Impact the AI
Switching from Concept to Active mode profoundly changes the underlying AI architecture processing your data:
| System | Concept Mode Behavior | Active Mode Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Vector Gatekeeper | Disabled. Allows broad sweeping of general competitor/market noise. | Enabled. Strictly rejects signals that do not match your exact Context Profile. |
| Priority Engine (WSJF) | Scores highly based on "Competitor Flaw" and "Market Gap Verification". | Scores highly based on "Churn Risk", "Urgency", and "Customer Demand". |
| Ask Mind Outputs | Generates "Concept Pitches" and "Market Defensibility" documents. | Generates "Agile PRDs," "User Stories," and "Release Notes." |
Strategic Best Practices
Do not switch your live, Active Mode product back into Concept Mode just to "test an idea." This will flood your active Zendesk triage with random speculative data.
If you have an Active product but want to explore a massive new expansion vertical, create a new Product in MindBacklog (e.g., "Mobile App - Beta") and set it specifically to Concept Mode. Keep your live data and your exploratory data completely isolated.
Once the prototype is successfully launched, simply flip the flag in Product Settings to transition that workspace gracefully into its Active operational life.
